Tales of a Quiet Book, Shapes

Guess what?! This is the last page!!!! This page has changed so many times in my head, so it is no surprise that I saved it for the end. Some of the things that I considered for this page include a puzzle page, a photo flip page, a memory page and the list goes on. Ultimately, I wanted to include something architectural in this book (as both my husband and I are in the field), but the problem remained, how I would actually go about this. I didn't want to do velcro or snaps because I had already done that, so, for a while, I was stuck. Then, a couple weeks ago, while visiting my sister, the bright glimmer of hope shined! One of the toys she uses for her daughter at church is a little tin with magnetic letters in it. Now the problem remained of whether to buy pre-made shapes or to design my own. I leaned toward the design side, but wasn't sure how I would turn it into magnets, then again, my sister shared another idea. A friend of hers had printed pictures of their kids onto magnetic paper, which seemed easy enough, but.... well I will get into that during the process part.
Picture
Okay, so just to give you an idea of the page construction, basically you are going to create a pocket that is attached to the page to house the magnets then you are going to create a flap that will just increase the surface area for shape building. Also, just as a heads up, when you go to buy the metal, stop by the equipment rental area and ask them to cut two squares at 6" x 6.5", they most likely won't charge you.

Materials:
* Fabric, for the page and for the metal pocket (keep the latter thin)
* Metal sheet (I found mine at the end of the nail isle at Home Depot)
* Magnetic paper (make sure to get the kind you can print directly to, if you can't find it, you can do an acrylic transfer)
* Velcro
* Reinforcement for the page and for the metal
* Glue gun and sticks

Shapes:
Okay, so here is the deal with the magnetic paper. I found mine at JoAnn's, but I didn't really read the directions and there was a picture of a printer on the instructions, so I thought I was good. As it turns out, the printer I saw was actually a cutter, like a Cricut. I had gone to Kinko's to get things printed thinking that they might be able to print on it, but they told me that unless it says on it that you can run it through a laser printer, they won't print it. I had them print the shapes onto regular paper for me, making two copies thinking that Modpodge would work, but it was just a mess. I later read online that there is a vinyl coating over the white part of the magnetic paper, which prevents the Modpodge from sticking, so I went back to the packaging and found that it will take acrylic paint. Not wanting to bust out the brushes, I looked for some way to transfer the image and came across the method of doing an acrylic transfer, which I posted last week and it worked out beautifully!

* Download the shapes, I have two options, my magnetic sheet was 9" x 12" so that is what I printed, but some of the shapes are a little small, however there are 4 of each, I came up with a download for an 8 1/2" x 11" sheet of paper and the shapes are bigger, but there are only 2 of each. You can decide which you want.
* Print your shapes either on the magnetic sheet or use the acrylic transfer
* Using an exacto blade, cut the shapes out

Flap:
* Cut two squares of the reinforcement at 7" x 6.5", put some glue streaks across the center of one of the reinforcement squares, center one of the metal squares, then attach to a reinforcement square, repeat for the remaining squares
* Run a bead of glue around the metal square edges, putting a little extra on the corners to protect from the sharp edges, trim the around the glue
* Cut three squares of fabric at 8" x 8.25", one of which will not be seen
* On the square that will not be seen, measure and, with a fabric pencil, mark lines according to the dotted lines in the photo below
* With wrong sides together, pin the fabric that will not be seen to the inside flap fabric and sew along three of the lines you just marked
* Slide one of the metal squares into the "pocket" you just made, then sew the remaining line to enclose the metal square
* Cut about an inch of velcro and sew the pokey side to the fabric that will be on the outside of the flap  toward the left and roughly in the center and on the right side
* With right sides together, pin the inside and outside of the flap together, sew along the top with a 3/8" seam allowance, baste around the remaining edges with the same allowance, cut the corners
* Iron the seams toward the center on each side, then unpick just the basted stitches
* Flip your flap right side out, then with the folded edges in, sew around the flap to secure
Picture
Pocket:
* Cut two squares of fabric at 10 1/2" x 7 7/8", one of which will be on the inside and not really seen
* On the inside square of fabric, measure and mark according to the picture below
* With right sides together, pin and sew along the top with a 3/8" seam allowance
* Flip the pocket right side out and sew along the marks just made with the exception of the one on the bottom
* Slide the remaining metal square into the "pocket" created from the lines just sewn, then sew along the bottom line to secure the metal square
* Make a "V" fold (refer to the first group of pictures) along the sewn lines of the two outside panels (they should tuck under the metal panel) then center on the page using the template and pin one side
* Satin stitch along the pinned side, then make the "V" fold on the remaining side and satin stitch to the page, finally, "V" fold both sides and satin stitch along the bottom
Picture
Finishing:
* Cut a strip of fabric, 2" x 6"
* Fold in half and position the remaining side of velcro, then pin, unfold and sew the velcro
* Fold the strip with right sides together and sew along the sides, then flip right-side out
* Use the template to position the flap and the velcro strip just made, then pin to page and sew
* Add a 1 1/2" border to binding side

Tales of a Quiet Book, Crayon Purse Page

2/5/2013

This is another rather simple page, but with embellishments you can add to the time it takes to complete it. The idea came from a couple of places. In my initial research, I happened upon a Monster book which contained a page with a monster that held a notebook and pencil. I really wanted to find some way of incorporating this idea and as I was looking for a page with hair to braid I found the solution. Featured on Girl Inspired, is a braid page that is matched with another page which has a purse to hold hair ties and such. Not long after this discovery, I was wandering the isles at Joanns, looking for something else entirely and stumbled upon some purse frames, so I added it to my cart and saved it for this page.
Picture
Alright, so I went a little crazy on embellishing here. I found this great tutorial for honeycomb smocking by Tumbling Blocks that I really want to use on a dress for my little one, but I wanted something to practice on so I chose this project. If you decide to do this, smock your fabric first then cut your pattern out. Also, just as an FYI, I used a strip of cardboard 1/2" wide (when you go to the site, you will know what I mean). I am not going to go into detail about the other embellishments, so if you have questions, please email me or leave a comment on the blog.

**Update: Since writing this post, I have made several other purses and streamlined the process a bit. To check that out, go to my Kiss Clasp Purse Tutorial. Also, in this tutorial I suggest using vinyl as the lining, which worked great for a while and would have continued to work great, if I hadn't of sewn the large snap on the back through it. I would suggest using a small piece of the reinforcement material on the back side of your outside fabric and sew the snap on before assembling the purse.

Materials:
* Fabric
* Vinyl, or any plastic to line the inside of the purse
* Lace, ribbon or any desired embellishments
* Purse Frame between 6" and 6.5" wide
* Needle and thread
* Pliers
* Large sew on snap
* Crayons and small notebook

Purse:
* Place your purse frame on paper and trace around the outside edge
* Place the page you just drew on under the template, then draw what shape you want your purse to be, keeping in mind that it will bulge out in front, back and pull in the sides
* Using a sewing gauge, make dashes every 1/2" or so at a 3/8" distance from your outline for the seam allowance then connect your marks
* Line up your purse frame and mark where the hinges meet
* Cut out the pattern from the paper then from your fabric for both the front and back and transfer the marks for the hinges to the fabric
Picture
* Add any embellishments of your choosing
* With right sides together, and starting at one hinge mark sew around the purse stopping and back stitching at the other hinge mark, then change to a basting stitch and, without backstitching, sew to the first hinge mark, completely closing up the purse
* Make cuts in the seam allowance around the curves
* Iron the top seam allowance around the basting toward the purse to create a fold
* Unpick the basting, then turn the purse right side out and iron the seams
Picture
Plastic Liner:
* Trim 1/8" off the outside of your pattern, then make a straight cut at the hinge marks to the inside purse line and cut around the top (you will not be sewing around the top of the purse for the liner)
* Cut two liners from the pattern
* Sew around the bottom of the liner with a 1/4" seam allowance
* Make cuts at the curves and finger-fold the seam allowance in toward the purse
* WITHOUT turning right-side out, place the liner inside the fabric purse
* Fit the top of the liner inside of the basting fold and use a bobby pin to hold, then sew shut
Picture
Purse Frame:
* Open the purse frame and fit the top of the purse inside the frame
* Hand sew the purse to the frame
* If you have a little bit of a hole where the purse meets the hinges, just hand sew it shut
* With a piece of fabric folded over the frame, use pliers to pinch the frame closed
Picture
Finishing:
* Place the female side of the snap on the back of the purse in the middle toward the top then sew to purse
* Using the template, place the purse on the page to locate where the male side of the snap will go, then sew to the page going through the reinforcement layer
* Add a 1 1/2" border to the binding side of the page

Tales of a Quiet Book, Mirror Page

1/29/2013

This is yet another rather simple page. The inspiration for this page came from Orange Crafts. The author created a page with flaps that folded back to reveal a smiling monster. I loved the idea but decided to have a mirror instead of a monster. I had some trouble at first locating a plastic mirror but alas, one day while looking for something entirely different on the Joann's webpage, I found it. I went that day and picked it up.
Picture
Materials Needed:
* Fabric (remember to prewash all fabrics)
* 9"x9" of reinforcement
* Plastic Mirror
* Glue gun and glue stick
Picture
Flaps:
* Cut four rectangles of fabric (two of the front fabric and two of the back fabric) with the following dimensions: 4 3/4" x 5 1/8", 4 3/4" x 4 3/8", 4 1/2" x 7 1/4" (You should have 12 rectangles)
* Cut two rectangles of fabric (one of the front fabric and one of the back fabric) with the following dimensions: 4 7/8" x 8", 4 1/8" x 8"
* Using the template, with the smaller rectangles first, place the front fabric right side up on the page and place a pin on the sides that need to be sewn
* Place the back fabric of the rectangles over the fronts with right sides together and pin the sides that need to be sewn, then sew the two layers together with a 3/8" seam allowance
* Do the previous two steps for the larger rectangles
* Turn the rectangles right side out and iron
* Sew around the edge for a finished look
Picture
Mirror:
* Cut your mirror into a 6" square
* On your 9" square of reinforcement, measure and mark 1 7/8" from one side (this will be the
binding side), then from the opposite side, measure and mark 1 1/8", from the top and bottom, measure and mark 1.5"
* Put a few lines of glue in the middle of the square you just made then center your mirror and press on to attach
Picture
I was trying to salvage a scrap of fabric which is why the right side doesn't extend to the edge of the reinforcement.
Mirror Frame:
* Cut two 9" x 4" strips, one 9" x 4 3/4" strip and one 9" x 3 1/4" strip
* Fold each of these strips in half lengthwise and iron
* Sew along the fold for a finished look
* Place each strip on the page in the appropriate spot (there should be a half inch overlap of the mirror), then pin and sew to page
Picture
Finishing:
* Using the template, find the centers of the opening
* Line up the small squares on the page according to these centers then pin and sew around the edge of the page
* Again, using the template, center the large rectangles in the opening, then pin and sew around the edge of the page (Once again, I was trying to salvage a scrap which is why there is such a big gap in the center, yours should meet both the edge of the page and at the fold side)
* Attach the binding to the appropriate side

Tales of a Quiet Book, Birds on a Wire

1/22/2013

This is your basic counting page using an abacus. I got the idea from Made by Molly, except that she did a page with birds on a fence. Although the construction of this page is somewhat time consuming because of the birds, overall, this page is fairly easy.
Picture
Materials Needed:
* Fabric (remember to prewash all fabrics)
* Felt for the numbers
* Leather for the "wire" (I found mine in the dollar bin at Walmart)
* Embroidery floss and needle
* 15 wooden beads
* Steam a Seam
* 9"x9" of reinforcement
* Pattern, remember to UNCHECK the fit to page box
* Duct tape

Assembly:
* Cut a 3" by 9" rectangle for the telephone pole and iron in half lengthwise
* Cut 15 birds from fabric and fron steam a seam
* Cut 5 strips of leather 9" long
* Using template, place pole and leather strips on page, then place and iron birds to page
* Satin stitch around the edge of the birds
* Embroider eyes and beaks
* Place the leather strips again, then, using a zigzag stitch with the length very close together, zigzag through the leather on the side opposite the binding, repeat for all strips
* Thread the beads onto the leather
* One at a time, pull each leather strip taut and use a small piece of duct tape to hold it in place, then repeat the zigzag stitch, being careful to penetrate the leather
* Attach the pole to the page
* Cut the numbers from felt and steam a seam, then iron into place
* Satin stitch around the edge of the numbers
* Attach a 1 1/2" binding

Tales of a Quiet Book, Monsters

1/8/2013

On Etsy, you can find several quiet books to gain inspiration, one such book, Monster Album, was the inspiration for this page. I knew I wanted to incorporate a lace up page as well as a weaving page, but nothing was quite hitting the right spot. I saw this page and a couple days later it hit me; monsters under the bed!
Picture
Materials Needed:
* Fabric (remember to prewash all fabrics)
* Shoelace/ribbon for weaving and lacing (1/4" or bigger, I think mine are too small)
* Felt for the back of the lace up monster
* Buttons for eyes
* 2 Magnets 1/2" in diameter
* (6) 1/4" Eyelets and tools to install (more info below)
* Embroidery thread and needle
* Scotch Tape
* Fray Check
* Steam a Seam
* 9"x9" square of reinforcement for the back of the page, plus extra for lace up monster and magnet
* Pattern

Bedroom:
* Cut window, sky, headboard and pillow from fabric and steam a seam
* Cut 2 beds from fabric
* Using template and bed, position sky, window, headboard and pillow on page and iron
* Satin stitch into place
Picture
Weave Monster:
* Cut monster from fabric and steam a seam
* Position on page using the template and bed, then iron in place
* Cut ribbons to desired length and apply Fray Check to cut side that will not be sewn
* Place a piece of scotch tape sticky side up across the top of the monster
* Place the ribbon where you want it and stick it to the tape
* Flip tape over and stick ribbon to page
* Straight stitch through ribbon then carefully tear away the scotch tape
* Satin stitch across top (I went back over a few times to make sure it was secure)
* Repeat the scotch tape process with the ribbons on the side
* Sew button eyes in place
Picture
Lace Up Monster:
* Cut monster from fabric, reinforcement and steam a seam
* Cut off about 1/8"-1/4" around the edge of the reinforcement monster
* Place reinforcement on felt, then steam a seam, the fabric, face up, and iron in place
* Satin stitch into place, cut from felt
* Place buttons for eyes and sew in place
* Position eyelets around body and mark centers
* Punch holes for eyelets, set eyelets

Ok, so here is the deal with the eyelets. There are two ways you can install them. The typical craft store carries eyelet pliers, which I have and tried but 9 times out of 10, the eyelet would not catch all of the fabric around the hole and/or would just smoosh and look very ugly. So, I headed to Tandy Leather, where I picked up a 1/4" punch, eyelet setter and anvil and the eyelets themselves. I also got a scrap of extra thick leather to protect my table when I was punching the holes and setting the eyelets. The smallest pack of eyelets I could find had 100 eyelets, but no worries, this is how you will bind the pages to each other. P.S. If it isn't obvious, I used a hammer to punch the holes and set the eyelets

* Using the template, position the monster on the page and pin
* Satin stitch the center (as shown in the bottom left picture) to attach to page
* Place a button nose so it covers the satin stitch you just made and sew to the page
* Lace with shoelace
Picture
Bed:
* Cut 4 circles of reinforcement about 2 1/2" to 3" in diameter
* Place one of the magnets in between the two circles
* Satin stitch around the magnet getting as close as possible
* As you are stitching, you will notice that the bottom circle will remain flat while the top one rouches around the magnet, this will be the side that you want to match up with the other magnet
* Find the side of the remaining magnet that attracts to the flat side of the previous magnet and repeat the previous two steps, with the attracted side facing down
* Double check that the flat sides are attracted to one another
* Place the flat side of one magnet against the back of the page roughly where the bed will hit when lifted up (mine overlaps the far left of the window and one of the panes)
* Hand stitch this to the reinforcement being careful not to penetrate the front of the page
* Cut 2 beds from felt, then stack the beds as such: felt, fabric right side up, fabric right side down, felt and sew, using a 3/8" seam allowance, around the sides and bottom
* Turn bed right side out, iron and sew around the sides and bottom as close to the edge as you can
* Place the bed on the page and holding the top in place, fold up the bed and place a pin where the magnets will meet
* Turn bed wrong side out and place magnet flat side down where the pin marks then hand sew to the felt being careful not to catch any fabric
* Turn bed right side out again and place on page then fold up to double check that the magnet is sewn in correctly
* Pin bed to page and satin stitch along the top to attach (I went over this seam a couple times too)

Bear:
* Cut bear from fabric and steam a seam
* Place and iron bear on page
* Satin stitch around edges
* Embroider eyes and nose

Being extra careful not to catch the bed, sew a 1 1/2" binding to the page

Tales of a Quiet Book, Stars

1/1/2013

When deciding what I wanted in my daughter's quiet book, I had determined that I wanted a page displaying emotions. I wasn't very successful in finding something that would work, however, I did find a clown page, but I'm not really a fan of clowns.... So, I came up with this super cute little star page.
Picture
Materials Needed:
* Fabric (remember to prewash all fabrics)
* Fuzzy material for cloud pocket
* Felt for the stars on the page, back of the pocket and back of the stars
* Embroidery floss and needle
* 4 buttons (that match your background) with a 3/4" diameter
* Blue mini rope (I found mine in the dollar bin at Walmart in the sewing section)
* Duct tape
* Reinforcement material for the middle of the stars
* Steam a Seam
* 9"x9" square of reinforcement for the back of the page
* Pattern
Picture
Pocket:
* Cut big Cloud from felt and fuzzy material and small cloud from the fuzzy material and steam a seam (Keep in mind what side you want the binding to be on)
* Position small cloud on large cloud and iron in place (you may need to iron from the back side if fabric is really fuzzy
* Satin stitch along the top of the small cloud to attach
* Position the large fuzzy cloud face down on the large felt cloud and sew along the top
* Understitch the felt side of the pocket, flip right side out and iron
* Line up the pocket with the bottom of the page and baste along the sides and bottom
Picture
Stars:
(This is done in the same fashion as the cupcake tops, just with mini rope loops instead of snaps)
* Cut 4 stars from felt and fabric
* Cut 8 stars from the steam a seam
* Cut 4 strips of the mini rope 3 1/2" long
* Print the words using your choice of font
* Using one of the techniques from this website, transfer the faces and the words to the appropriate stars
* Embroider words and faces (I used a back stitch for the words and any lines, and an embroidery satin stitch for anything that needed to be filled in)
* Using the template, position the word stars and iron to page
* One at a time, iron a fabric star to a strip of felt and satin stitch around the edge then cut the star from the strip
* Fold each mini rope in half and attach to a scrape of reinforcement with duct tape
* Using a zigzag stitch with the length very close together, zigzag through the mini rope loop to attach (the same method used for the clasp on the door of the Dress Up page)
* Cut the scrap of reinforcement around the mini rope loop, being careful not to cut the loop
* Place the mini rope loop on a strip of felt, then place and pin the fabric star over the top
* Straight stitch on the inside of the satin stitch, making sure to sew through the loop
* Cut star from felt being careful not to cut the loop
* Position each face star on the matching word star and place a button where it would need to be for the loop to catch it and the face star to cover the word star, then sew the button in place

Add a 1 1/2" binding to the appropriate side.

The inspiration for this adorable little page came from my favorite site for quiet book inspiration, Orange Crafts. The blog author, Katarinka, created a quiet book based on Thumbelina that features a little closet with dresses for Thumbelina. I loved the idea and found a way to make it mine. Honestly, I think I had the most fun making this page! (For a mini version of this page, check out this post.)
Picture
Materials Needed:
* Fabric (remember to prewash all fabrics)
* Ribbon and/or lace for embellishment
* Felt for the back of the dresses and inside the doors
* Velcro
* Embroidery floss and needle
* Button for clasp
* Hair tie for clasp
* Duct Tape
* Steam a Seam
* 9"x9" square of reinforcement for the back of the page
* Pattern (UNCHECK the fit to page box when printing)

Page Background:
* Cut 2 strips of velcro 9" long
* Place the soft side of one strip about 2" from the top of the page and sew along the top and bottom going through the reinforcement
* Place the second strip 3" from the bottom and sew in the same fashion as the previous strip

Dolls:
* Cut the back side of each door from fabric
* Cut each doll from felt and steam a seam
* Cut hair and under dress from fabric and steam a seam
* Using template, position doors on page and place each doll in the center of each door, then iron
* Position and iron hair and under dress
* Using a satin stitch, sew all layers to the fabric; switching thread colors as necessary
* Cut 2 strips of velcro about 1" long to sew to each doll
* Position and pin soft side of 1" strip of velcro, then sew along all edges and make an "X" in center
* Embroider face
* Straight stitch down the middle of the legs to separate them being careful not to go too far
Picture
Doors:
* Cut each door from fabric, felt and reinforcement
* Use the template to figure the inside edge of the right hand door
* Position hair tie in the middle of the reinforcement door and, using a small piece of duct tape, tape hair tie to reinforcement
* Satin stitch the hair tie to the reinforcement making sure that the needle goes through each side of the hair tie
* For each door, place felt on table, then stack back side door (with doll on it) face up, front door face down and reinforcement on top, then sew along inside edge (make sure that the doll is right side up)
* Open the left hand door and place the right hand door where the tie would meet the left hand door then position the button in the middle of the tie and sew the button to the outside fabric and reinforcement
* Sew along the top and bottom of each door
* Iron doors flat and sew close to the edge of the top, inside edge and bottom
* Again using the template, position and pin the doors to the page and sew along the outside edge
Picture
Dresses:
* Cut dress from fabric and steam a seam
* Position dress on felt and iron on
* Sew any embellishments to dress
* Using a satin stitch, sew dress to felt
* Cut dress from felt
* Cut a 1" piece of the rough side of the velcro
* Sew velcro to another piece of felt
* Position dress over back side of felt with the velcro toward the top of the dress
* Straight stitch around dress
* Cut dress from second piece of felt

Add 1 1/2" border to binding side.

Tales of a Quiet Book, Woodland Creatures

12/12/2012

2 Comments

Last week, I posted a Babushkas page. This woodland creatures page is the male counterpart to that lovely little page. I created it for my friend, Stephanie's book.
Picture
Materials Needed:
* Fabric (remember to prewash all fabrics)
* Faux leather for the moose
* Felt for inside the Bear and Fox
* Various buttons for adornment
* Embroidery floss and needle
* Steam a Seam
* 9"x9" of reinforcement and some for the Bear and Fox
* Pattern, remember to UNCHECK the fit to page box

Pocket:
* Cut pockets from furs/fabrics for the moose and the bear (I used the page material and the back of the bear material for the inside of the pocket so it wasn't so thick)
* With right sides together, sew along the top of the pocket
* Understitch the inside of the pocket
* Iron the pocket

Moose:
* Cut Moose body and head from fur and the steam a seam
* Cut antlers and nose from faux leather and steam a seam
* Using the template, position body and antlers on page and pin
* Flip page over and iron from the back (the fur is too thick from the front and the leather will melt)
* Position and pin Moose pocket to body and
* Using a satin stitch, attach to the page and reinforcement (for the body, start on one side and go to the middle, then go to the other side and meet in the middle, otherwise, your pocket may end up crooked)
* Position head and nose on page, and pin in place (I used double sided tape to help position the ears)
* Again, flip page over and iron from the back to attach
* Using a satin stitch, attach to the page and reinforcement
* Embroider nose holes onto nose and sew eyes (I did the nose before attaching it and that is why it is crooked)
Picture
Bear:
* Cut 1 Bear from front fabric and reinforcement (cut a little bit smaller) and 2 from felt
* Cut 1 Bear snout from back fabric and steam a seam
* Position snout on Bear and iron on
* Stack front fabric Bear on top of one felt and the reinforcement Bear
* Satin stitch snout to fabric, felt and reinforcement
* Sew button eyes and nose to fabric, felt and reinforcement
* With the wrong side up, place back fabric on table, then position remaining felt Bear on top, then stack the sewn Bear on top of that and position the Bear pocket over all pieces and pin through all layers
* Satin stitch through all layers to back fabric
* Cut out Bear from back fabric
Picture
Fox:
* Cut 1 Fox from front fabric and reinforcement (cut a little bit smaller) and 2 from felt
* Cut 1 Fox face from white fur and steam a seam
* Position face on Fox and pin in place, then flip it over and iron on from back side
* Stack front fabric Fox on top of one felt and the reinforcement Fox
* Satin stitch face to fabric, felt and reinforcement
* Embroider eyes and nose
* With the wrong side up, place back fabric on table, then position remaining felt Fox, then stack the sewn Fox on top of that and pin through all layers
* Satin stitch through all layers to back fabric
* Cut out Small from back fabric

All that is left is to sew a 1 1/2" border onto the page.

Tales of a Quiet Book, Babushkas

12/5/2012

I found this babushka page a while ago and essentially duplicated it, but added my own flare. I'm quite pleased about how it turned out, however, there was a bit of a snare that turned into a learning experience for the rest of the pages. By the way, I did create a boy version of this page, which, consequently, I like more (it features woodland creatures), but I am not going to post it until next week.
Picture
Materials Needed:
* Fabric (remember to prewash all fabrics)
* Felt for the faces and inside the medium and small
* Various ribbons for adornment
* Embroidery floss and needle
* Steam a Seam
* 9"x9" of reinforcement  and some for the medium and small
* Pattern, remember to UNCHECK the fit to page box

Pocket:

 Tales of a Quiet Book, Button Flowers and Bugs

I found this page on the blog Made by Molly and saw no reason to change it. I created a new pattern which is posted below, but it looks essentially the same. I did, however, create a bug page that works for boys. Stephanie, my neighbor, did the sewing on that and went with snaps as opposed to buttons. If you would rather do snaps, follow the method used on the cupcake page, posted a couple of weeks ago.

Materials Needed:
* Fabric (remember to prewash all fabrics)
* Fabric with flowers that have a diameter of at least 1.5", bigger is better
* Felt for the back of the pocket and the flowers
* 5 buttons with a 3/4" diameter
* Green 3/8" ribbon
* Steam a Seam
* 9"x9" square of reinforcement for the back of the page
* Pattern (I've included patterns for the bug page as well)

Stems:
* Cut 5 strips of the ribbon, each about 6"
* Using the template, arrange the ribbons and pin into place
* Sew ribbon to page using a zig-zag stitch (go through the reinforcement)
* Satin stitch the top of the ribbon to prevent fraying
* Sew buttons to the top of the ribbons
Picture
Pocket:
* Cut the pocket from fabric and felt
* With right sides together, sew the felt and pocket material along the top of the pocket
* Understitch the inside of the pocket
* Iron the pocket
* Baste the pocket to the page
Picture
Flowers:
* Cut flowers from fabric and steam a seam
* Iron flowers to felt
* Satin stitch around the edge of the flowers
* Make button hole in center of flower
* Cut flower from felt

Add 1 1/2" binding to side.
