Starry Textured Beanie

1/15/2020

A couple of months ago, I created a lovely shawl using pink, mustard and cream colored yarns. I used up all of the pink, but had enough of the yellow and cream to make a beanie. I got to work, searching Pinterest for inspiration and found a brioche beanie using the star stitch. I thought it would be perfect, but I didn't have enough yarn for the brioche technique, so I wrote this pattern. Enjoy!

I am knitting for children ages 8-10, non profit children facing leukemia treatment... Any suggestions on adjustments to fit these children.

I would say go down a needle size or two and use a lighter weight yarn. Like maybe an Aran or DK weight on size 7 or 8 needles would do the trick. Please let me know if that works.

I myself will start making one now with thicker yarn on larger needles, and decides to adjust the pattern by going from 6 to 5 repeats of the pattern with triangular tops in the round, if you get what I mean. Hope my needle size increase will match up with that one-sixth pattern decrease. And I will drop some rows of initial ribs on the bottom and stars in the top part to adjust for my higher row height because of the larger needle.

For kids you could do the same but stay with the suggested US10/6mm needle.
Of course it will give you only a specific size for a specific child head, but switching to a 9 or 8 needle will than give you some room for a larger smaller version.

Good luck

I like to think I am a seasoned knitter but I have to say I am thankful I did not have to pay for this pattern. , I loved the look of the picture of it but wow doing it was horrible! Needless to say I didn't complete it , but ended up ripping it out.

I'm sorry you had troubles. This pattern is brand new and hasn't been tested, which is why it is free. I'd be happy to help straighten out any issues you are having if you would like to email me with more details.

Hi there I'm stuck on row 11, I can only manage to do the (K1 P1) 3 times and then I don't have any more stitches to do the 6stars, did I do something wrong?

This was my first time doing star stitch and I thought this was an excellent pattern - repeats were easy to follow and star stitch spiral was easy to see so I knew when I made a mistake and had to fix anything. Thanks!

Seasoned knitted and I am having trouble with the height. Something is off. Decreases start to quickly?? I have ripped it out once and thought the mistake was mine, second time same problem. Help! I love the pattern and the colors. Spend $$ on yarn and want it to work.

I tried round 11 and can only make 5 stars with on stitch left over...is the 96 stitch cast on correct? Or am I missing something?

I found the 96 stitches was correct. The problem I had was the decreases come to early. I am going to try one more time and not begin my Decreases until row 35 or 37. Hopefully that will solve my problem.

Nice stitch but the hat doesn't really stay on well. The body is too short and the ribbing is too loose. Maybe the ribbing should be done with less stitches or smaller needles?

I really liked how it looked once I finished it but the hat was way too big. It was so bit that it was unwearable. I am planning on waging it to see if it shrinks.

I love the star pattern, and the colors you selected. I agree with others, the hat is much too big around. I tried to shorten the length at cast-on, fearing it was going to be too big, but the repeat prevented that. Maybe thinner yarn and smaller needles?

I have a pretty worsted weight yarn I would like to use for this hat. 100 grams=approx. 200 yards. The label recommends a size 8 needle. Will this work? Should I hold two strands together to add bulk to my stitches?

For your info: 7mm needle (between us 10.5 and us11) + thicker yarn won't work for sure. Just tried it as I miss circular needle 6mm/us10 at the moment. Ribbing circumference already clearly too big for an average adult.
Will retry now on a 5mm/us8!

Just finished the hat on 5mm needles.
Can only confirm some other testers here: the bottom 1x1 rib part is not balanced with the starry top part. Because of my choice to go one size smaller in needles the rib part circumference is about perfect, but the starry part to narrow. I can recon on the original needle size the starry part will be good and the rib too large.
And I would suggest 3 or 4x a row 19+20 repeat for additional height always.

Maybe I will retry later with the rib on 5mm and the starry part on 6mm.

I used the recommended yarn & needles but the hat was way too loose. Found a video tutorial for the star stitch but was not happy with the look. After 5 inches I gave up.

I’m confused by the star. If you p3tog, yarn is in front- so yarn over puts it in the back. How do you purl the same three again with the yarn in back?

I did this pattern on 7mm needles with a thinner(4) yarn.
It was fairly easy to follow the pattern, but it didn’t quite fit me. I’m trying now with a thicker yarn, and will add a few repeats of rows 19/20 I think before the decrease and hope for the best!
It really is a beautiful hat when complete!

Hi, I love this but it’s driving me insane! After row 19/20 I seem to only go upwards in equal rows and not having the stars staggered like in the pic. What am I doing wrong please?? I’ve already restarted it once and have been on this for 2 weeks at this stage 😥

yea, it took me a while to wrap my head around it tho. You basically need to move the SM two further whenever you are starting a new row 19:
Remove marker, With yarn in front, slip 2 stitches purlwise, replace marker

Not sure why it didn't work in the beginning but it did in the end :D i hope this helps

So, I used a weight 5 bulky yarn for this pattern and it was WAY too big. I'll try reducing the number of stitches to see if I still get relatively the same results... But I'm a little disappointed. So glad it is free to use though

Admire yr creativity. Found the pattern difficult to follow. Had to figure out some rows mathematically to make come out right. Do love the overall look and only reason I persevered. Ending difficult. Plz write number of sts left after dec rows. Too tight at ending. Move to smaller circumference ndls?
