Welcome to Kit's Crafts!
The Short Bio:
Hey there! My name is Kristin Baird and I love to knit, crochet, sew, craft, cook, bake, basically, I love to create. The purpose of this blog is to share what I know, what I am learning and to encourage others to try new crafting mediums. Want more? Subscribe to my email list below. I promise you will only get emails when I publish new posts.
The Long Bio:
When I was about 9, I sat across the room from my grandmother and intensely watched as she crocheted an afghan. When she noticed me observing, she said, "Would you like to learn?" I hopped up from my chair before she finished the question. I have had this passion for learning new ways of creating since birth. My mother used to put me in a room with a stack of paper and child-proof scissors, then come back an hour later to a million little creations. I LOVE to make things. I especially crave learning new techniques in a medium I am already pretty good at.
At age 12, I stayed with an aunt for 2 weeks in the summer. During that time, she taught me how to bake with yeast and how to use a sewing machine. Throughout my teens, I furthered my baking abilities and became known in my family for making apple pie from scratch as well as cinnamon rolls. My step-dad still asks me to make those cinnamon rolls. At 16 I purchased my first sewing machine (a 60-year-old Kenmore) and a seamstress neighbor helped me design and sew my prom dress the next year.
When looking for a career choice out of high school, I was quickly drawn to interior design because of the wide range of possibilities that type of degree offered. In 2009, I obtained a Bachelor's Degree of Interior Design from Utah State University. It was at USU, that I was first introduced to the “green” initiative that has been sweeping the nation. Seeing the importance of becoming more knowledgeable in sustainable practices, I became a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Accredited Professional. Later on, I began looking for ways to incorporate eco-friendly ideas into other aspects of my life. It didn’t take long for me to discover that many disposable items we use every day, could become yarn* and fuel my ever increasing desire to create items using knit and crochet as a medium. Since I graduated, my focus has turned toward my daughters as opposed to developing a career, but my passion to create still continually nudges me and I generally have at least 2 or 3 projects in the works at any given time.
I have been greatly blessed by relatives, neighbors and professors stepping in and fostering my curiosity as well as providing me with new outlets to express my creativity. In turn, these instances are why I decided to form this website. I want to encourage others to break out of the fear of trying something new and develop a creative talent.
P.S. If you are wondering about the name of the site, my mother calls me Kit (for no particular reason) and given that she is semi responsible for my creative side, I felt it appropriate. This website will be based on whatever I am interested in or making and I welcome input. If there is something that you would like me to make or show how to make send me an email at [email protected]. Happy crafting!
*I offer free tutorials on how to make yarn from t-shirts, plastic bags and paper.
